International Council for Science (ICSU) ins Leben gerufenes Forschungsprogramm, das die
Untersuchung der vielfältigen Beziehungen zwischen Land, Atmospäre und Ozean einerseits und der
Biosphäre andererseits zum Ziel hat. Es gliedert sich in eine Reihe von Unterprogrammen (z. B. globale atmosphärische Chemie, biosphärische Aspekte des Wasserkreislaufs, globaler Wandel und Ökosysteme, ozeanische und klimageschichtliche Perspektiven) und wird von nationalen IGBP-Komitees unter dem Dach internationaler Zusammenarbeit (ICSU u. a.) koordiniert.
